Galp Energia’s latest confirmation that its Mopane-1X has yielded a significant column of light oil raises hopes early in the year.
Mopane-1X is in the Orange Basin off the coast of Namibia under PEL 83 on Block 2813.
The Portuguese oil explorer Galp (80%) operates the PEL with partners Custos (10%) and Namcor (10%).
The announcement Friday about the latest discovery follows two others made on January 2 and 10, 2024.
Galp said Friday it had successfully and safely drilled, cored, and logged a deeper target of the Mopane-1X well to discover a significant column of light oil in high-quality reservoir-bearing sands.
The partners will analyse the acquired data during the coming weeks to assess the commerciality of the discoveries.
The next step is to evaluate the extent of the Mopane discoveries through a drill stem test on Mopane-1X while the rig relocates to the Mopane-2X well.
Custos Energy CEO Knowledge Katti said the continuing success of the initial exploration campaign, including a second light oil discovery at Mopane-1X, further demonstrates the scope and potential of PEL 83.
“This is another significant milestone for Custos, positioning us for further growth and continued success, underpinned by our unparalleled position in the heart of the basin,” Katti said.
Petroleum commissioner Maggy Shino said the announcement of this significant additional discovery is a further testament to the hard work and dedication of the partners involved, as well as another demonstration of the potential for further growth in the oil industry.
“With this discovery, we are one step closer to harnessing the full potential of this campaign. We wish Galp and its partners Custos Energy and Namcor success with the remaining drilling campaign,” Shino said.
