The mines minister, Tom Alweendo, has welcomed the news of the oil discovery by Galp and partners Custos and Namcor in the Orange Basin as a further demonstration of Namibia’s ability to attract top-tier partners making world-scale investments.

Galp announced Wednesday that the results of test work on the Mopane-1X well indicate a significant oil discovery.

“On behalf of all Namibians, the Ministry extends its congratulations to the joint venture partners Galp, Custos, and Namcor,” Alweendo said.

Petroleum commissioner Maggy Shino said the oil discovery is a testament to hard work and dedication.

Shino added that the discovery also showcases Namibia’s ability to unlock world-scale resources, turning Namibia into the world’s next great hydrocarbon province.

“We are proud to have achieved this milestone. We congratulate the joint venture partners on a safe and successful initial exploration campaign,” she said.

Sintana Energy Inc. chairperson Knowledge Katti said the preliminary results of the initial exploration campaign on PEL 83 demonstrate the expanding scope and potential of Namibia’s Orange Basin.

“We extend our sincere congratulations to our partners, Galp and Namcor, on this initial discovery,” Katti said.

He added that this is a significant milestone for Custos and Sintana, positioning us for further growth and continued success.

Sintana has an indirect 49% interest in Custos Energy, which holds a 10% working interest in PEL 83, Galp (80%), and Namcor (10%).

Katti is also the Custos Energy CEO.

Sintana CEO Robert Bose said the timeliness of his company’s entry into Namibia demonstrates the ongoing progress and success within their exploration portfolio through local partners, including Custos.

“This light oil discovery is further evidence of the scale and opportunity within our portfolio, including an unmatched position in the heart of the Orange Basin in Namibia. We congratulate the joint venture partners on this milestone success,” Bose said.
