The earlier reported signs of hydrocarbons by Galp Energia for the Mopane-1X well in the Orange Basin off the coast of Namibia have been proven to be a significant oil discovery.

On January 2, 2024, Galp Energia said the Mopane-1X well had shown signs of hydrocarbons and was too early to conclude before the results were assessed.

Galp has an 80% interest in PEL83, with Custos and Namcor each having 10%.

Namcor confirmed the latest development on Wednesday, saying a detailed analysis of the results indicated a significant oil discovery in the Mopane-1X well.

“The discovery in PEL83 lies in the Orange basin and includes a substantial column of light oil in high-quality sands,” Namcor said, adding that it’s not just an achievement for us but a beacon of hope for Namibia’s economic future.

The Mopane-1X was one of two wells where drilling started on November 17, 2023. The other one is Mopane-2X.

Galp said it will continue to analyse the acquired data and anticipates performing a Drill Stem Test (DST) in the coming weeks to assess the commerciality of this discovery.

The drilling operations at Mopane-1X will proceed to explore deeper targets. Upon completion, the rig will be relocated to the Mopane-2X location to further evaluate the extent of the Mopane discovery.
