Aldoro Resources has said Namibia hosts the world’s biggest reported strontium resource after defining 802.1 million tonnes grading 2.11% strontium at its Kameelburg critical minerals project.
The Australian-listed explorer is positioning the strontium discovery as a major part of the Kameelburg development alongside rare earths and niobium, saying the project could eventually supply a significant share of the global market for strontium carbonate used in permanent magnets and other industrial applications.
Aldoro’s August 2026 corporate presentation describes Kameelburg as having the “World’s No.1 Strontium Resource”, alongside what it calls the world’s second-largest rare-earth resource. The overall Kameelburg mineral resource stands at 804.5 million tonnes, of which 802.1 million tonnes make up the reported strontium resource.
The scale of the strontium resource could give Namibia exposure to a critical-mineral supply chain that has received far less local attention than uranium, lithium, rare earths or copper.
Aldoro says Kameelburg is also the only project among the listed rare-earth peers to have a reported strontium resource. The companies used in that comparison include Lindian Resources, Iluka Resources, Lynas Rare Earths and US producer MP Materials.
Strontium opens second magnet market
The significance of the discovery, according to Aldoro, lies partly in strontium’s use in ferrite permanent magnets.
Strontium carbonate is an important raw material for strontium ferrite magnets, which are widely used in automotive and industrial motors, electronics, loudspeakers and sensors.
Aldoro says strontium ferrite magnets account for more than 70% of global permanent-magnet usage by volume, with demand exceeding 1.1 million tonnes annually.
That could give Kameelburg access to a different magnet market than the rare-earth mineralisation already identified at the project.
Kameelburg contains about 1.37 million tonnes of neodymium-praseodymium oxide, or NdPr, which is used in high-performance NdFeB permanent magnets for applications including electric vehicle traction motors and wind turbines.
Strontium, by comparison, provides exposure to the much larger-volume ferrite magnet market.
Aldoro is consequently presenting Kameelburg as a project capable of supplying raw materials into two major permanent-magnet markets from the same mineral system.
Aldoro targets 400,000 tonnes a year
The company’s longer-term ambitions for strontium are substantial.
Based on an envisaged processing operation that will eventually handle 10 million tonnes of ore annually, Aldoro forecasts potential production of about 400,000 tonnes of strontium carbonate a year.
It says that would meet about 50% of global strontium carbonate demand.
Those numbers are not yet production guidance from an operating or construction-ready mine. Kameelburg remains under study, and Aldoro states that its development timetable is indicative.
The company is, however, already examining how to recover strontium alongside the project’s other minerals.
Initial metallurgical work reported 99% recovery of strontium, compared with 72% recovery for total rare-earth oxides and 62.4% for niobium pentoxide.
Kameelburg’s mineralisation is predominantly hosted in ancylite together with strontianite and associated niobium-bearing minerals.
Aldoro says the mineralogy could allow run-of-mine material to be leached directly with hydrochloric acid without first undergoing conventional beneficiation, potentially allowing several mineral products to be recovered from the same ore.
Alternative supply source
Aldoro is also pitching Namibia’s resource against concerns about the concentration of existing global strontium supplies.
The company says disruption at Iran’s Bandar Abbas export port in April 2025 highlighted supply-chain vulnerabilities, while strontium carbonate prices rose from around US$1,000 per tonne to approximately US$2,500 per tonne during 2025.
It argues that Kameelburg could eventually provide an alternative strontium supply source outside China and Iran.
That proposition remains dependent on Aldoro demonstrating that the large resource can be developed economically.
The company plans to advance a scoping study during the second half of 2026 alongside continued metallurgical optimisation, followed by a pre-feasibility study. Feasibility work, permitting and financing would still be required before a mine development decision.
Aldoro’s indicative development schedule ultimately targets first-phase production by the end of 2028, although the company cautions that the timetable remains illustrative.
