Mines minister Tom Alweendo says the mining industry spent more than N$21 billion on local procurement in 2023.
Alweendo also said the mining industry contributed to the fiscus of at least N$6.4 billion in royalties and taxes, compared to N$4.2 billion in 2022.
The minister, who spoke during Rossing Uranium’s launch of its sustainability and performance report for 2023 on Tuesday, said the mining industry’s direct employment is now at around 18,189.
According to Alweendo, the Namibian mining industry contributed 14.4% to the GDP in 2023 compared to 11.9% in 2022.
Additionally, the minister said the sector also contributed a total expenditure of N$211 million in CSR.
“As the Minister responsible for mines and energy, I am impressed by the mining industry’s dedication, innovation, and resilience, as it continues to play a vital role in our country’s economic growth and development,” Alweendo said.
He said Rossing’s achievement rests on its visionary leadership that approved Phase 4 mine expansion, which translates into extending the Life of the Mine to 2036 from 2026 as previously forecasted.
Alweendo said industry players must move away from short-sighted approaches that prioritise immediate gains at the expense of the industry’s long-term sustainability.
“As we navigate the complex challenges of the 21st century, responsible mining stands as a beacon of hope and a pathway towards a more sustainable and equitable future.
“It requires collaboration and partnership among governments, industry stakeholders, civil society, and local communities,” Alweendo said.
