Northern Ocean has confirmed that its Deepsea Mira semi-submersible drilling rig has spudded the Kharas well for BW Energy in the Kudu license, offshore Namibia, marking what the company describes as an “exciting milestone” in the country’s growing oil and gas sector.
The well, located in one of Namibia’s most prospective offshore areas, is being drilled by a mixed crew of Namibian professionals and international specialists. Northern Ocean praised the collaboration on board, saying the spud reflects the “teamwork, dedication, and professionalism” of all involved.
The Deepsea Mira has already built a track record in Namibia, completing a successful drilling campaign with TotalEnergies earlier in 2025 before entering a consortium partnership with BW Energy and Rhino Resources. Under this agreement, Mira is contracted for two firm wells, with the option for three more, securing operations in Namibia until at least April 2026 if all options are exercised.
The spudding of Kharas is part of a wider momentum in Namibia’s offshore industry, which has drawn international attention following recent discoveries in the Orange Basin by majors including TotalEnergies, Shell, and Galp Energia. For Northern Ocean, retaining Mira in Namibian waters is viewed as a strategic move to capture further opportunities as the basin matures toward development.
“This is not only a milestone for Northern Ocean and BW Energy,” the company stated, “but also another important step in unlocking Namibia’s offshore potential.”
