Windhoek Renovations Plant Hire has taken delivery of Namibia’s first Liebherr TA 230 articulated dump truck, strengthening the company’s growing presence in the mining sector and marking a significant addition to its fleet of earthmoving equipment operating nationwide.
The 28-tonne payload articulated haulier has already been deployed at a gold mine near Karibib, where it is hauling fill material for the construction of a slimes dam.
The acquisition forms part of a broader fleet expansion by the Namibian-owned company, which also took delivery of a 21-tonne Liebherr R 920 Litronic crawler excavator. Both machines join an existing fleet of about 30 Liebherr units owned and operated by Windhoek Renovations.
Founded in 1985, Windhoek Renovations has grown into one of Namibia’s largest plant hire and earthmoving contractors, operating approximately 70 machines across mining, contracting, road maintenance, demolition and hard rock excavation projects. The family-owned company is led by founder Robert Wirtz and his son Alex Wirtz, who oversees technical services and sales.
The arrival of the TA 230 is particularly significant, as it marks the first machine of its kind to enter the Namibian market and signals the company’s intention to expand its capabilities in the mining and bulk earthworks sectors.
According to Alex Wirtz, the machine has already demonstrated strong performance since being commissioned at the Karibib operation.
“WR Plant Hire is proud to already have this machine operating on site, where it has certainly lived up to expectations. The performance, reliability and production output delivered so far have been nothing short of impressive,” he said.
“Investing in world-class equipment like the TA 230 is part of our ongoing commitment to offering our clients the highest standards in earthmoving and mining operations across Namibia.”
The purchase also reflects Windhoek Renovations’ longstanding relationship with Liebherr-Africa.
Over the past three decades, the company has steadily built a substantial Liebherr fleet that includes excavators, wheel loaders and crawler dozers operating across various projects throughout Namibia. Existing equipment includes Liebherr A 904 C, A 924 C, R 920, R 926 C, R 934 B, R 954 C, R 974 B and R 984 C excavators, L 550 and L 580 wheel loaders and PR 744 and PR 764 crawler dozers.
Wirtz said the decision to introduce the TA 230 was a natural progression for the company as it continues investing in premium equipment capable of operating under demanding Namibian conditions.
“The introduction of the new-generation ADT allows us to offer enhanced efficiency, reliability and performance on site, while giving our clients the opportunity to experience and benchmark this machine against other leading brands in the market,” he said.
Beyond machine performance, Windhoek Renovations cited aftermarket support as one of the main reasons for its continued investment in the Liebherr brand.
“The Liebherr Africa team has consistently provided excellent support over the past 30 years. From sales to technical assistance, the level of service we receive makes a real difference. When you operate a fleet of this size, reliability and support are critical – and Liebherr delivers on both,” Wirtz said.
The delivery comes at a time when demand for mining and earthmoving equipment in Namibia is increasing as expansion projects in uranium, gold, copper, and critical minerals continue to drive activity across the country’s mining sector.
Liebherr-Africa General Manager for Earthmoving Tendayi Kudumba said reliable aftermarket support remained critical to ensuring equipment availability and productivity in mining operations.
“In industries such as mining and plant hire, equipment downtime is out of the question, and OEM support – including genuine parts stockholding and technical support – is key to ensuring that machines operate at peak performance, even under extreme conditions, allowing our clients such as WR to run profitable operations,” Kudumba said.
