Prospect Resources says exploration activities at its Omaruru project in Namibia have been scaled back to minimum holding commitments as the company evaluates potential commercialisation pathways for the lithium-bearing asset.
The project, which lies near Omaruru in the Erongo Region, is now fully owned by Prospect Resources following the company’s acquisition of the project interest from Osino Resources in 2024.
According to the company, exploration work at the site has now largely ceased while it focuses on unlocking the project’s longer-term value through strategic partnerships and possible development options.
Prospect said it has executed several non-disclosure agreements with parties interested in the project’s critical mineral suite, which includes lithium, rubidium and caesium identified during earlier exploration campaigns.
The company did not disclose the identities of the interested parties but indicated that the discussions aim to identify potential commercialisation strategies for the asset.
Critical minerals such as lithium, rubidium and caesium are increasingly sought after globally because of their use in battery technologies, electronics, speciality alloys and other high-technology applications.
Prospect confirmed that the exploration licence covering the Omaruru project was recently renewed for a further 2-year period, allowing the company to retain the asset while pursuing potential development or partnership opportunities.
The company has also submitted an Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC) application to Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, a regulatory step required before further exploration or development activities can proceed.
Prospect Resources entered the Omaruru project through an earn-in agreement with Osino Resources in October 2022, targeting lithium-bearing pegmatites within Namibia’s Karibib pegmatite belt.
Osino Resources originally held the project through its Namibian subsidiary Richwing Exploration (Pty) Ltd, which had conducted earlier exploration work including geological mapping, geochemical sampling and drilling across the licence area.
Under the agreement, Prospect committed to spend US$1 million on exploration to earn an initial 40% interest in the project, with the option to increase its stake through additional exploration expenditure.
Following exploration work and negotiations between the companies, Prospect moved to consolidate ownership of the asset.
In March 2024, the company acquired the remaining project interest from Osino Resources, giving Prospect 100% ownership of the Omaruru lithium project licence (EPL 5533).
The licence area lies within the Karibib pegmatite belt, a region known for lithium-bearing pegmatites and located near other lithium projects in central Namibia.
Prospect’s strategy appears to focus on preserving the licence while assessing commercial options, rather than continuing large-scale exploration spending at the site.
The Omaruru project is part of Prospect’s broader portfolio of lithium assets, aimed at supplying critical minerals for the global energy transition.
While exploration activity at the site has slowed, the company indicated that interest in the project’s mineralisation remains strong, with several parties now evaluating the asset under confidentiality agreements.
The outcome of those discussions could determine the next phase of development for the Omaruru project, which remains prospective for a suite of rare and battery-related minerals.
